Sarafina Lion with the Feltingfarmerlady
Date: July 22-23 from 9am-4pm each day
Roar! Come spend two full days at Millhaven in beautiful Rockbridge County near Lexington VA and create your own needle felted lion using the Sarafina Fiber Art Lion supply pack and all the wonderful techniques championed by Sara with helpful hints and detailed instruction by the FeltingFarmerLady.
Day 1 will consist of making the wire armature and building up the body and head of the lion with core wool.
Day 2 will find us all making a lion pelt, finishing the face in great detail and furing the magnificent mane. Roar!
Workshop fee of $200 includes lunch each day and all materials needed to create the lion. Class size is limited to 6 persons.
This is not a beginner level workshop, it is advanced and participants must come with a knowledge of armature making and making basic needle felted shapes. Participants should have several if not more advanced projects under their belt before attempting this workshop. Note that some of the lion may have to be completed at home ie: all the toes and paws. We may not have time to finish every little detail but participants will go home with the knowledge and skills to do so.
COVID NOTE: depending on weather, the workshop may have to be held inside so bring a mask if you are worried or not vaccinated. I am leaving mask wearing up to the discretion of the participant. Even if inside we will be able to maintain social distancing. I am so excited about getting back to holding in person workshops!

This is a jammed packed workshop that will explore botanical printing both by the simmering method and the steaming method along with using natural dye blankets to enrich the colors obtained from the leaves themselves. We will explore how to prepare both cellulose and protein fibers for printing and have an overview of natural dyes and how to create and use natural dye blankets. There will be handouts and resources provided.
To practice folding techniques for larger botanical print pieces and clothing, we will dive into (a shallow dive) Shibori folding and dyeing with indigo.
There will be lecture, demonstrations and hands on practice during class.
By the end of the weekend you will go home with the knowledge, and hopefully the confidence, to create beautiful botanical prints at home along with 2 shibori tea towels, 2 silk scarves and the wool yardage you created in class .
Prior knowledge of botanical printing and natural dyes is helpful but not required. Please note that there will be a significant amount of standing during the weekend.
